Besides Muzarabani area which lies in the Northern part of Zimbabwe in the Zambezi valley area, Chipinge district was also hit by floods as the Sabi River burst its bank on Saturday 29 December 2007.The heavy rains started early in the morning of 29 December and ended on the 30th of December at about 5:30 am. The floods affected Tongogara refugee camp which is home to a population of about 2,832 refugees excluding staff working for NGOs in the camp. There are four distinct locations at the camp and these are Australia, Canada, USA and Vietnam and all of them were affected. The camp is located approximately 198km to the south of Mutare.
Two thirds of the camp was severely affected with water flooding houses and institutional buildings up to a level of 50 centimeters. Most houses were flooded with water which damaged food items such as rice, meal-mealie, beans; clothing, furniture, and beds among many household items.
